Harps are seldom centre stage, but on leap day a concert grand pedal harp will take the limelight in Wanganui: under the auspices of Chamber Music Wanganui, Wellington-born harpist Ingrid Bauer is bringing a programme of classical harp masterworks to town.

Ingrid, now 27, fell in love with the harp when she was 4, but had to wait until she was 11 before her parents gave in to her insistent requests for harp lessons. She completed a BMus in Performance Harp at Victoria University before moving to Australia to further her playing. Since then, she has performed in the US, Germany and Australia, as well as here in NZ. Ingrid has twice been a semifinalist in the Gisborne International Music Competition, and plays regularly with professional orchestras in both Australia and NZ.

The concert Ingrid is presenting in Wanganui is a mix of music from across seven countries and three centuries. Ingrid says, 'It's a very interesting and varied programme, with a lot of strong repertoire. I'll be playing some of the harp's best-known works, as well as some lesser-known pieces that aren't performed as often as they deserve; and I also have a couple of keyboard works that transfer beautifully to my instrument. It's all music that I'm really looking forward to sharing.'
