In 1897, a Wanganui Borough Councillor suggested setting aside land for a public opera house to commemorate the record reign of Queen Victoria.

Three years later, the theatre opened, Since then, travelling shows, touring artists and Wanganui residents have performed in the historic building, one of the few remaining wooden Victoria-style touring theatres still in existence. Famous actors and singers have played the boards, others have had their start in Wanganui, and young folk and old gained skills backstage. Strongly supported today by Friends of the Opera House working together with the Royal Wanganui Opera House Board and the Whanganui District Council, the theatre is regularly used by residents, national and international performers. This history gives a taste of the life and times of a grand Victorian building. Author Penny Robinson and research assistant Pam Richardson live and work in Whanganui.
